At dawn in August, I journeyed out Harvey Shaw Road, from the heart of Walla Walla, Washington, coming around a big 90 degree bend in the road I was faced with this dramatic scene. It stopped my faithful Mist Dragon in its tracks. I had to stop and immerse myself in this beauty and power. I haven't recovered yet; I still feel it deeply. (This is a good thing.) The clouds to the west were purplish black and behind me, the rising sun filled the fields with a wondrous light. Resting at the top of a utility pole high over my right shoulder was a Swainson's Hawk. I think of these buteos as the mistresses of the Palouse, and that all the land she surveyed was hers. I bow to her majesty. |
