William Wittmann – Artist’s Statement

My father was an art museum director -- he built some of the finest collections in America. Really. Our house was filled with art, all of it good. So what? I loved art, but being an artist wasn't for me. It was for artists, museums and Dad. My pursuit was for the Sacred.

Since my first trip to Salisbury Cathedral and to Stonehenge over four decades ago, I have been stirred and sometimes transformed by the magic of sacred places. My quest is to find places where the underlying life force that supports the whole universe and everything in it can be felt directly.

My healing art as a hands-on CranioSacral Therapist aims to find the sacred within the universe that is the human body. My fine art work expresses my sense of life energy or the profound peacefulness I perceive in the sacred sites I explore. Everything I create attempts to connect the viewer to the Sacred.

I create the original drawing plein air, on location, so that I can be fully influenced by the energy underlying the place. That life force flows into the art and then into the viewer where it can be a healing power and an inspiration. This art is an exploration of deep connection with the Sacred, and I know the work is complete when the piece becomes a doorway into that realm.

I have been painting, drawing and making block prints for years, and have always yearned to do etchings. Etchings now form the heart of my work.

Each etching is based on a single plate which is used for the whole edition of about 25 images, but each print from the etching is different and unique reflecting the aliveness of place. Each is varied in some way. Some I hand paint, some I print on different papers, some I use the chine collé process, some I print with different color inks; so, they will look all of a family but with variations.

The idea of owning art is to have pieces surrounding you that you love, you may not even know why. And the art connects you to experiences that fill your soul, you may not even know how. You simply choose to live with them and let them enrich your life.
